Becoming a successful leader in the workplace takes a lot of skill. During the 2009 recession U.S. companies spent $12 billion on leadership development by training executives to lead in a new era of business. To move up, you have to shape up. There are 56% of company leaders that say they will soon face a shortage of qualified exclusive talent.

To train a good leader, it takes leadership development. About 64% of learning executives are focusing on speeding up leadership development at their organization and 44% of companies plan to increase spending on executive education. On average, companies are spending $1,228 per employee on learning and development.

There are many goals in leadership development training. The first step is preparation. The second step is character – learning to walk the talk, integrity, purpose, mission, ethics, beliefs and values. The next step is learning the principles; point of view, big message main points, and tenets. The fourth step is personality, which connects with your charisma, style, originality, authenticity, and being one of a kind. Then we have experience beyond local and regional and more national and international. Step seven includes your expression on substance and style in writing, speaking, coaching, consulting, mentoring, training, and teaching. The last step in leadership development is your influence – difference, results, change, and transformation.

Now that the training has been completed, it’s time the leader takes steps of action. First, there is a lot of anticipation due to building wide external networks, and looking further beyond current issues. Next is critical thinking and questioning everything to solve any underlying problems. Then, interpretation, decision making, alignment, and learning. It’s important to seek honest feedback, making tweaks and adjustments quickly if necessary. While this is necessary, it is also important to have a balance precision and quickness to keep your team moving forward.

It is important to remember when becoming a leader, 60% of CEOs said that creativity was their most sought after leadership ability. Creative steps to take in your new leadership role can include engaging with a new generation of employees, partners, and customers, inviting disruptive innovation, dropping outdated approaches and taking balanced risks. A leader strategically adapts and mixes different styles to fit any situation. Do you have what it takes to become the next big leader?
