Is Personal Branding Overrated?
This post originally appeared on the Volt Blog. As more job seekers hit social networks to make connections that will help them find a job, there seems to be an increase in the way people self-consciously craft their online personality. To some extent, this is a natural part of presenting yourself professionally. But over-emphasizing the social media side of what you have to offer an employer could have some drawbacks too. You may spend hours selecting the perfect profile photo to use across all your social networks, finding great industry articles to curate, and connecting with influencers on Twitter yet most job application systems don't allow for anything other than a text-based version of your resume. If you're applying for a job, I (and other recruiters) won't see your avatar or how many followers you have. I'll only see the information on your resume. The accomplishments on your resume aren't restricted to your employment history. If you're a developer, create a site or app that does one thing well and highlights your expertise; if your job requires using a specific type of software, do something interesting with it that you can turn into a bullet point on your resume; if there are any non-profits that could use your skills, consider volunteering once a week to build experience and real-life connections. Employers care about what you can do, not how you look doing it. The other side-effect of an overly-crafted personal brand is that you end up with a sanitized version of yourself, removing any personality that actually shows an employer who you really are. While some people have become strong advocates of personal branding, some employers have learned to be wary of it. As a recruiter, I've never placed a developer with a client because they had a great personal branding strategy. The number of times a client has asked me for a candidate's Klout score is exactly zero. So instead of asking yourself how you can compose an authentic and engaging status update that further defines your brand, find a way to do something that adds experience to your resume. I'm not suggesting you ditch all efforts to make a name for yourself using social media. But, unless your job directly involves social media, focus on accomplishments in your field and let those speak for what you can offer an employer. 管理新知 您可能感兴趣的文章 It's Better to Start Your Career in a Recession 2013-12-11 If You Ever Wanted To Be In Pictures, Here’s Your Chance 2013-07-17 Why a Mobile Career Site is Vital to Reaching Diversity Candidates 2013-10-15 最近文章 TEST 2018年01月15日 嫖娼被抓不属无故旷工,公司解雇赔4万!(法院判决) 2018年01月15日 如何判断你是否具有HRBP胜任力?
