Are you Champagne or Beer?

When I was last in Boston for TRUBoston I got talking to Bill Boorman and Johnny Campbell and Kevin Wheeler. We were wondering around trying to find each other not far away from Boston Common and Bill started on what can best be described as a Rant on Champagne vs. Beer recruiters/speakers. And after some careful consideration I agree whole heartedly with him. Here in a nutshell is the difference between the Champagne and the Beer Speakers in the HR/Recruitment conference circuit. The Beer Speakers are there for everyone, these are the folks that are by-in-large still fully immersed in the profession, and are making innovative leaps because that s what it takes to get a job done. The come out to speak not for self aggrandizement but simply because they have an idea(s) or point of view to share which has help make them a greater success. The problem that is inherent with Beer speakers is that most often the bigger shows do not seek them out, and when they put in an application for speaking they are turned down because no one has ever heard of them, and they don t write blogs, they aren t on Youtube etc etc .these are the folks that you would normally want to chat with in the office, or over the backyard fence because they are smart and the fount of all knowledge in your small ecosystem. The Champagne Speaker though is everywhere, they are online 24/7, they are extremely Social, the exude at times an air of celebrity. When they go to places they often hide in the corners because they are afraid of the mobs that will want a moment of their time. They constantly get asked to speak at events, but they won t go unless there is some sort of monetary reward, or an opportunity to convert the speaking engagement into business. They are the consultants who stopped working in HR and Recruiting a long time ago .they are bright and fizzle and they taste really really good. I m sure there are people that fit nicely in-between those categories, and for now we will call those folks Wine, they have graduated above beer but they aren t as popular a speaker or writer yet, so they still have to work for the gigs, and most often they still have a foot in the business. There seems to be an evolution to a practitioners life as a speaker: Beer - they usually start at the local level and are often given their big break in one of the fringe shows like an UnConference or HRCamp or HREvolution etc . Wine - they do one or two of the bigger shows but they haven t forgotten their roots and still attend and speak at some of the local smaller shows because they want to keep their roots somewhat planted. Champagne - they hold their noses when someone even mentions a smaller local show, they are all about the big shows, the recognition and the flashing lights, with tons of folks lining up to get their latest book signed. Personally I think I fall right into the Wine category but find myself harkening back to the days when I was a full on Beer speaker .and hope to never be seen as Champagne although Bill told me I was a couple of times (teasing). Which category do you fall into? And given the choice who would you rather see speak? I could be wrong but I drive a lot more value out of the conversations with the Beer/Wine speaker but I m a lover of local communities and it s one of the reasons we started the HRCamp and UnConference movements. But I might just be Radical. 管理新知 您可能感兴趣的文章 HR微语—职场沟通艺术 2014-04-01 HR如何从事务型向业务型华丽变身!?
