There s the glamour, which is out of the question. And then there s the high pay, which is the main reason why a lot of us are always working hard. In other words, being in a managerial position (any top level position actually) is a communal dream and we can all relate to the hardships, heartaches and mental pains that comes with this dream. From IT jobs to marketing jobs, the dream is a steady fixture in the recruitment in Singapore work world. Do you feel like your dream is too far-fetched, though? Don t have confidence in your skills and strengths, in that, you don t think they can lead you to glory lane someday? Say, in your sales job, do you feel like your communication skills still need a big leap of improvement? Or in your financial job, are you not satisfied with how your number analysis currently fairs? Honestly, there s a 50/50 possibility that you re already prepared to take on an executive position and vice versa. No matter what though, you should have all these points checked out (and done) to increase your success chances. Treat this checklist as your ultimate reference of must-dos so that you d improve your promotion prospects. Speak with your boss (and yes, you should still do this even though your executive dream takes place in another location and does not involve your current company at all). Executive experience is executive experience; by talking to your boss, not only will you help yourself with pertinent information and climbing the corporate ladder tips but also, you will learn some trade secrets that you wouldn t have otherwise discovered. It takes guts to ask your boss out for a personal meeting, but well, this is for your career and you shouldn t feel shy. Make it a habit to read the news. Unknown to many, the newspaper is actually a very good source of industry information. Keeping up with latest industry events as early as you can will give you an advantage in terms of strategies development and execution. It s a skill that cannot be acquired easily, but the thing is, the source is free. Take advantage! Start keeping a journal. Journal keeping can not only discipline you in terms of time and task management, but it can also help you to realise your hidden and untapped talents. Do not censor your journal; try to be as honest as possible whenever you re writing an entry. If you feel unsafe (and you must censor), do so in a discreet manner. Everything must be there. Socialize. In other words, talk with people about your executive dreams and your current career standing. The best career advice comes from your colleagues and friends. The reasoning is the same on why you should make the effort to talk with your boss. If you don t have many career friends, now s the time to start building your network.
